About the Program:

Dr. Brenda Greene and Desiree Cooper discuss the themes in the short stories of Cooper, stories which explore the interior lives of women and validate their real life experiences.  Cooper reflects on her journey from attorney to journalist and poetry and fiction writer. Know The Mother represents the genre of flash fiction. Greene and Cooper also discuss the current state of Black literature which Cooper calls the “Golden Age of Black Writers.”







About the Author:

Desiree Cooper is the author of Know The Mother, Wayne State University Press, 2016.  She is a 2015 Kresge Artist Fellow, former attorney and Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist and Detroit community activist.  Her fiction and poetry have appeared in Callaloo, Detroit Noir, Best African American Fiction 2010 and Tidal Basin Review, among other online and print publications.  Cooper was a founding member of Cave Canen, a national residency for emerging black poets, and she is a Kimbilio fellow, a national residency for African-American fiction writers.
