Tales of Our Times: An Anthology is a collection of writings from members of the Elders
Writing Workshop, which is designed to encourage elder African-Americans to turn their
memories into creative and original stories and describes the ordinary experiences and events
that have shaped their lives and contributed to our collective history. Their stories reveal the
roots of American culture, as we know it today. Over the past decade, the participants have
produced three published anthologies: The first volume of work was published in 2012; the
second volume, published in 2014, focused on their memoirs connected with the historic Siloam
Presbyterian Church in Brooklyn; and volume three was printed in 2016 and included
“Memories of the Civil Rights Era” and “Messages for the Post-Obama Era.” The lives of these
women are inspiring and motivational. Their stories, in turn, become our history.
