The English Department of Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York is very excited to collaborate with Brooklyn Bodega in hosting the 4th Annual Hip-Hop Institute. The Hip-Hop Institute (July 10 through July 12, 2018) is a three-day conference that consists of lectures, panels, and workshops dedicated to the study and advancement of issues of entrepreneurship, mental health, and social justice in our community. The overarching theme of the conference is “Speak Up” and programming consists of lectures, panels, and various workshops.

The Hip-Hop Institute serves as a means to educate and inspire attendees with gems of knowledge from various radio personalities and journalists, entrepreneurs and mental/physical health experts. This year, participants include April Reign (#OscarSoWhite), Kameron McCullough (DussePalooza), April Walker (Walker Wear), Wes and Ebonie Jackson (Brooklyn Bodega, Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival), John Henry (Harlem Capital), Ali Bianchi (Atlantic Records) and more.

Time/Location: 10:00am-3:00pm at Edison O. Jackson Auditorium, 1638 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY

The Juice Hip-Hop Exhibition (Friday, July 13, 2018) is a night dedicated to showcasing all aspects of the culture.  Activities include DJ showcases, dance battles, a sneaker exhibit, live art as well as original art installations. Featured Artists include: Kerim The DJ, Midnite, DJ Scott Lauren, 24: Ours, and more.

Time/Location: 6:00pm-11:00pm at Littlefield, NYC, 635 Sackett Street Brooklyn, NY

The Finale Concert (Saturday, July 14, 2018) is the Festival aspect of the week-long programming. Featured Artists include: Black Star (Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli), Pharaoh Monch with DJ Boogie Blind, Skyzoo, Caleborate, LATASHA, Radamiz and more. Hosted by Uncle Ralph McDaniels and Torae.

Time/Location: 1:00pm-7:00pm at Brooklyn Bridge Park, 11 Water Street, Brooklyn, NY

 

Admission to the Hip-Hop Institute is free for the MEC community (students, faculty and staff) with valid school ID on a first-come first-serve basis. (Register here.Medgar Evers College community members who attend Tuesday, Wednesday AND Thursday will be given a $15 discount on tickets to the Finale Concert on Saturday. Additionally, Medgar Evers College community members who attend Tuesday, Wednesday OR Thursday will receive $10 off tickets to Saturday’s events.

Tickets can be purchased on-site during the Hip-Hop Institute and other events throughout the week.

Established in 2005, The Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival is New York City’s largest Hip-Hop cultural event that showcases the positive aspects of Hip-Hop culture by highlighting Hip-Hop’s legacy as an agent of artistic progression, community building and social change. In addition to musical performances, the Festival offers a number of activities for its audience, including panel discussions, exhibitions, parties, an award show and a family-friendly block party. The Festival is more than a concert or outdoor fair. It is a family reunion for lovers of this great culture.
